What is it that you seek when you travel?

I know it seems like I have adopted all the orphaned blogs, but I promise this is going to be the last take over for a while (I think) and I thought this fits extremely well with my Travel String theme. You know by the time we all finish with these blogs you'd know me better than I do

I have a thing about Contiki tours. They have a reputation of being rowdy, inconsiderate and a waste of time. I remember when I was at the foot of a part of the Swiss Alps having arrived on a Busabout bus, a bus load of Contiki 'Campers' arrived at the same time.

It was around 1pm and after I rested, claimed my bunk bed and ate a bit of bread from the convenience store, I set out for an afternoon walk. The Contikis by this time, are still unloading their luggage and tents and have already gotten their grog out, mucking about, having a great time.

It was sunny, bright happy day and I enjoyed my quick stroll to the Trummelbach waterfall and spent about 30 mins gawking at this powerful gush of water cutting through the tunnel of rock. I was amazed that by the time I got back to camp, they were STILL setting up camp, with the only difference was by now, half of them were too drunk to lift a finger.

The next day, bright and early I got up so I can enjoy a whole day in nature's backyard, in some of the most beautiful sceneries and snow capped mountain. It was once again, one in the afternoon when I returned to have lunch, and some of the Contiki campers have just decided to get up, hung over from the night before, recovering by lazying in the sun.

Why would you pay $3000 to join a tour that doesn't focus on experiencing the destinations, I don't know. But perhaps that's the only way some people know how to travel.

I seek different experiences and cultures and try to get as much out of the destination as I can. The fact that I don't prefer to spend the night away in pubs doesn't mean I don't like to party, but my idea is that I can do that at home, why fly miles to waste your time in bars and spend the money that should be used on the actual trip.

Or, perhaps some of you have been on some trips that you feel just a waste of time as well? What do you seek when you travel?
