Online bidding hits accommodation bookings (LINK)

Earlier this year I attended the Travel Expo in Sydney and one of the exhibitors was a newly established company UBid4Rooms, an online accommodation bookings system that allows you to bid for lastminute rooms rather than booking them at standard rates.

At the time I didn't think much of it, I entered their competition (as you do at a Travel Expo - enter as many as you can!), took a gift promotional pen and off I went to the next stand.

They drew my attention back to them earlier this month as they were featured on Getaway, and today I just received another newsletter from them letting me know that there are now more than 200 properties throughout Australia and New Zealand to bid from.

Isn't it a great idea? Bidding for the last minute cancellation / vacant rooms because they know that it's better having someone paying something for it than leaving it empty and not earning money for the properties?

Unfortunately they don't yet have as many property listing as say lastminute.com.au and wotif.com - I guess they still need time to grow.

I reckon we should be allowed to bid for everything else too. We probably can, I just don't know about them. I know writers can bid for freelance jobs, but can employers bid for new employees? That would be good - competitive salary for real. I like that idea

So it's all bidding now. From eBay to bidding for holiday packages to now, bidding for accommodations. The world is getting ever more competitive, even between buyers!

If I owned a motel I would do that for rooms that were booked or cancelled at the last minute. As for empty rooms you would need to set a limit to make sure the cost of having someone in there was covered, then it would be better than having it empty.

A couple of years ago in the UK I saw an ad on TV for a place where you can bid on airline seats. Don't know if they still do it or not. Or even which airlines participate.
