There are so many so called 'travel advisories' discouraging us to travel!

We have been told to let our clients know to check with Australian Government's Smart Traveller website to check security and advisory information on the countries they are travelling to. And I believe each country in the world also have similar set ups to protect their citizens from dangerous travel destinations.

However, there are just so many of them. The government has their say, and then, the various different websites and councils have their say. They all say different things! For example, Indonesia is one country that Australia still has under the 'please reconsider the need to travel to' list due to terrorism threats and attacks, but they do not appear in the US Travel Warnings list. And while the rest of the world prepares to travel to China for the Olympics, the US board is actually advising against it. The US also advice against travels to Mexico, a country not even in the warnings list on the Australian website.

Of course, these warnings come with different gradings, and to even appear on the lowest grading that says 'be alert to own security' seems to be a little harsh. Drink spiking and pickpockets are all part of the warnings. But wait - where does Sydney lie? Obviously the safest place on earth, despite the fact that they failed to mention all of the above happens here regularly.

Besides political unrest and terrorst threats, we also have to look at the health warnings such as the possibility of dying from avian flu. So after you've read all travel advises, you might as well save up the money to build an under ground borrow. Not even your neighbours are safe.

So who exactly do we turn to? Who is giving the right information? In Iraq I could be killed in a car bomb; in Bali I could be killed by hotel bombing; in China I could be stomped on by the red army, in Russia I could be a target from the neo-nazies, in the US I could be shot for accidentally invading someone's property, in New Zealand I could be raped by sheeps and at home I could be robbed.

*sigh* I might as well just sit here for the rest of my life. Even then I am in danger of getting electricuted by the computer.

Funny I have to see this post a few minutes after recounting to some visiting friends how my other laptop was toasted by lightning. It was right inside my own room in our house! Forgot to unplug it. Lightning burnt the transformer and melted the UPS too.

Anyway, you are right. Appreciation of the dangers differ. Those are just advisories but they make you think twice about your travel destinations.
