Tips for female travellers

In the last issue of travel news magazine Travel Talk (June/Winter2008) they had a quick column with Tips for female travellers I thought I'd share. They have taken this from the SMS-based travel messaging service, Travel Messenger. I feel that some of these apply to all travellers!
1. Take photo copies of all your travel documents, keep them separate from such as passport numbers and itinerary to yourself, in case you lose the originals.
2. Pack as lightly as possible (yes ladie, ditch those stilettos you are not going to need) and always pack your own bags. Don't carry any parcels, which contents you are not sure of, as penalties for drug posession are severe.
3. Know the general dress code for your destination. Note of what local women wear to get a feel for apropriate attire. (You don't always have to show off, sometimes you are just looking for trouble for wearing that skimpy little top you *think* is alright. Yes - it is your right, but don't complain when you get unwanted attention.)
4. Use a handbag with inner zip pockets with a strong shoulder strap, wear it cross your body to deter any possibility of pickpockets or bag snatchers. Consider wearing money belt under your clothes.
5. Talk freely with fellow passengers, but be wary of disclosing details like your final destination and length of your stay.
6. Where possible, arrange to be met at the airport. If a driver is collecting you always check their identity by asking their name and confirming details relating to you and your destination.
7. Stay in a hotel or guesthouse with restaurants and late-night stores nearby. The activity makes it far safer than staying in a corporate area that will be quiet at night.
8. Never divulge when you are travelling alone. Inform inquisitive strangers that you are meeting a friend or your partner.
9. Avoid weaing provocative, figure-hugging clothing (see my coments in note 3!) Unwanted attention can be also minimised by wearing a wedding ring and avoiding eye contact.
10. Act confidently. Know where you are going, what you are doing and walk with assurance. (This of course, require pre-trip research into the places you are travelling to and knowing exactly which streets to turn and which buses to catch!)
Of course, these are very general tips and some frequent and experienced travellers will find unnecessary but - for first time and less confident travellers, these tip are certainly very useful!
