The single supplement: why should we always travel in pairs?

Sydney Morning Herald ran an article about being 'Singled Out' as a traveller, discussing how singles are being disadvantaged when it comes to groups and tailored tours that they are made to pay a singles supplement because they don't have a partner to share with.

I've never had to pay such fees as I've always organised my own travels but I can see how many single travellers complain about the singles supplement. Just because they are alone why should they be paying more than the rest of the group?

According to the article, "The "supplement" is an additional charge often imposed on solo travellers when they book a hotel or a cruise and it applies regardless of whether or not they are willing to share their accommodation" which seems quite unfair to me. If you are already willing to share you room with another traveller, then wouldn't that qualify you as a 'partnered' traveller already?

What do you think of the singles supplement for travellers? Do you have any tips to avoid such cost?

fobzy here, well if you're wealthy like me, it doesn't really matter, but for other singles that supplement adds considerably to their cost, and why are there not single rooms now, smaller than the others, to accommodate one.

A poor affair. Well done.

This really gets to me and is why I opt for backpackers accommodation over hotels now... I don`t see why we should have to pay extra just because we travel alone - it`s a seat right? or a bed? imagine if we didn`t travel because we were single travellers!

travel is awful as a single person, i swear our whole society is set up to bully people into relationships the way single people are treated like second class citizens

Katyzzz, Ash and Morgan Bell - Thank you all very much for your opinions.

Yes, travelling single really is a pain these days, but I agree with Ash - backpackers are the way to go.

Having said that - the actual process of the travel when you are single is great - you get to meet a lot more people when you go anywhere by yourself rather than with a partner, a friend or within a group, because then, you are reluctant to try to talk to other people but your own parties...
