Rucksacks or wheelie suitcases?

These days, 'backpacking' is almost turning into a form of travel snobbery.
"All I need is my backpack." and "Look at those weaklings who have to use suitcases!" are common saying by the backpackers on their travels.

However, with the availability of travel conveniences and luxury, there seem to be less of a reason to need a backpack.

Backpacks are great because you can bring them every where. But oh, it's just so much easier these days to wheel a suitcase around! Not that today's backpacker really get in there and do it hardcore. These days we have so much convenience and transport you lug your backpack out of the airport, get on the bus, then into the hostel and you go out exploring with a small day pack. So why not go with suitcases?

Suitcases do take up a lot of time, and there are less 'straps'. Yes, straps can be so useful! You can hang anything off it, as long as you can carry it. But suitcases can stack a lot better!

Are you a suitcase person or a backpack person? Why?

Wheelie siutcase all the way! I panic if I don't take pretty much EVERYTHING with me wherever I go. You never know when you might need those ridiculously high boots for a weekend on the coast, or you may just need that (faux) fur lined jacket if there is a sudden frost in the middle of summer.

Plus, I am a woman who enjoys her creature comforts. I need hotels - therefore, I might as well take my giant wheelie suitcase and let the concierge see to it! I would never make it as a backpacker.

You know it'll always depend on the destination. If you're going somewhere you won't have a permanent accomodation as what backpackers do, then a backpack works best.

If it's the kind where you have an itinerary and places to stay booked already, then i'd rather do suitcases.

With a kid sometimes it has to be both But suitcases day bag can do well with a kid too.. we just pack much more hahah

Hi Amy

When I'm travelling for a while, a backpack is definitely the way to go. But I think my elongated travels are on hold for a bit and smaller, more frequent holidays are on the horizon. So for now, it's a suitcase with wheels and I have to say, it's a relief. As fantastic as backpacking is, it's hard work!!

But in general all trips are welcomed

I like my backpack better for trips where every day is a new place and I'm not using a car.

Wheelie when I'm staying at one base for most of the trip, and can get a ride to and from the airport or wherever it is I drop my luggage.

But I wish EVERYONE would check their luggage on the airplane and quit trying to stuff massive pieces of baggage into the cabin. It's crowded enough already. Or maybe I could get a seat down in the hold (with some heat of course). There must be lots of room down there

You know guys, I just remembered now there is a thing called a WHEELIE BACKPACK, which is basically a backpacker backpack with pull out wheels for times when you want a break from the shoulder pains!

There we go - debate issue solved

Michaelie- now that you mentioned girly travels, you would love this: Just Us Girls Travel and Getaway for Girls - I think they are a great idea! (Found out about them at today's Travel Expo in Sydney!)

Hazel - it does depend doesn't it? I guess I don't have a kid yet so I wouldn't have a clue what traveling with children would need. Do you read Holidays with Kids?

Tracy - yes I do enjoy my odd times of travelling with the suitcase, especially on my business travels when I am staying in the Crown in Melbourne for example. I simply feel weird checking in with my saggy and soiled backpack!

Hi Jill - thanks for dropping by! Yes, it sometimes does annoye me when people take over-sized cabin luggage. You'd think the airports would check on this before they board? - Oh wells. I guess that's just what we have to put up with in cattle class!

"The ultimate women's holiday" - I like the sound of that! All spas and shopping.

Wheelie suitcase for me. I take my life travelling and clothing options that allow me to dress for any occasion. In reality I usually end up wearing the same jeans every day though.

Visa Card, Contraception, Passport all go in the backpocket. Bottle of water in hand.

Hi Sara - maybe try just bringing those jeans and nothing else next time and see

Locky - what about going to places that don't have credit card systems?

AmyHuang,
lol, thats a very interesting point....

I'd like to think maybe double the contraception and just smile a whole lot but realistically, slipping some notes in the backpocket would solve that right?

plus, t's not like you take a backpack or suitcase to carry wards of casharound ?!?!

Possibly not Locky - I wish I HAD wards of cash tho. Double the contraception is a good idea, sometimes countries like Japan unfortunately don't always have the right sizes... *oops, did I say that out loud?* - no offense, but it's true.
