Green travel: Myth or reality?

There has been so much focus on environmental issues and people are always looking for things to do to 'Go Green'.
Travellers of course, are always looking for ways to travel green, however I think, if we are going to travel the way we do - we'll never really be as green as we can be.
Unless, you literally just walk, and swim. Are we going to be able to walk through to Europe? No. We must fly. Flying means green house gases emissions = not green travel.
Well, ok since we can't cut down that much on the actual transport part, people have thought of ways to cut down on other things.
This website: Go Green Travel Green provide readers tips on how to travel green. Including bring certain items to make sure we use less electricity and waste along the way.
I have a problem with this though. All the 'initiatives' to go green all want you to buy something. Buy a microfiber towel it says. Buy this. Buy that. And for me, that's just another form of consumerism.
Why not focus on 'Reuse' instead?
Buying new things mean that you will always have old things to throw out. They eventually become landfill. So whatever electricity or water you are saving by buying that new item is just creating another piece of rubbish. For me, I think we should concentrate on learning to reuse a lot of what we already have, because new things are always going to appear and new inventions are made everyday. Does that mean to 'keep up' with the green trend, we'll have to buy something new every time?
That's my opinion anyway. What's yours?
