How much can Carbon Offset travel do?

This is on the lips of every traveller's concerns. With so much focus on climate change, travellers (instead of industries) are being blamed for the 6% of the carbon emission they cause by travelling overseas on planes or trains.
Many tourism operators and airlines are now introducing carbon offset fares. Pay an extra $25 and you can travel with less guilt.
Is this really helping or is this just another way to commercialise and cash in on the climate issue? What does paying the extra mean? You still use the same planes, use as much fuel as everyone else and really, you are still contributing towards the emissions that is causing harm to the environment.
Do you think these extra costs to fly carbon neutral is fair? Carbon offset is really just mitigating the emissions rather than reducing them. Not a real good solution is it? I mean, sure they may be using these extra money to plant more trees, and to go towards other planet saving initiatives, but these things take a while to come to effect and there are other ways to put money into the works of environmentalists.
To me it's a scheme of using money to solve a problem, like paying money to pass university for example. We can call that exam grading offset.
It's really bribing mother nature if you ask me... but you might have other opinions...
Should travellers be paying these offsets? Even if they are already contributing to other environmental initiatives already?
