Are you willing to go through all that trouble so you can save travel costs?

In the above article, the tip to save airfare cost is trying to research for cheaper carriers to fly with and breaking your journey into many segments to try to save the airfare we normally pay for a streamlined flight by a major carrier.
I've tried to do it before, having researched into most of the budget airlines I thought this would save me costs too. For example let's say just going from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur:
Standard airfare with Malaysia Airlines:
The price currently being advertised with Flight Centre to depart in May is $886 return Syd-KL.
I know that Air Asia flies from Gold Coast to KL direct, so I had a look. Although its base fare is cheaper than Malaysia Airlines, after you've added in 1 meal each way as well as 15kg checked in luggage each way (yes - nothing is included! Talk about budget!) it ends up being a total of $891
So I thought ok this doesn't work because I would still need to get to Gold Coast from Sydney. So let's try another way:
Fly to Bali for $695 on Garuda and then to KL on $226 fare on Air Asia. Still more than the direct Malaysia airlines.
Fly to Brunei for $778 on Malaysian Airlines then to KL on Air Asia for $192. Nope, still more.
Try Macau? Sydney to Macau on Malaysia airlines (Viva Macau came up with a $1000 fare) and then Air Asia to KL on the $175 fare. Still more!!!!
The thing is, most of the cost are for luggage allowance and it's never the same price as you saw on TV. Unless of course, you are lucky to snatch up a special promotion.
That's taken me an hour to research. I give up. Just give me standard fare direct to KL please.
Well, actually, even better - just get me one of those round the world fares. I'll go as I like.
