Clean sandy beaches! Shopping spree! Food heaven! It has to be Batu Feringghi!
It has never failed to be the most famous spot for both my family holidays as well as my getaway trips with my buddies.
Batu Feringghi is a beautiful spot in a beautiful island by the name of Penang located North West of Peninsular Malaysia in the South East Asia. Being an island, Penang is connected to the mainland by a bridge that has been there for ages: a bridge at the length of approximately 13Km. One could get there either by land, by air or even by its famous ferry services. Being born and bred in city, this ferry ride is one thing that I’ll never miss every single time I head to the island of Penang.
Like mentioned earlier, Batu Feringghi is famous for its 3 primary aspects. Let me begin with the beaches. Geographically being sited at the edge of the Straits of Malacca, Batu Feringghi faces Malaysia’s neighbouring country: Indonesia. Well, to be specific, Sumatera, one of Indonesia’s largest mainland.
If you haven’t guessed by now, Batu Feringghi is one of the hot spots in Penang and is literally flooded with tourist, both from Malaysia and outside Malaysia. The clear, clean beaches definitely play a huge role in attracting visitors to Penang. Well, that is Penang as a whole, as one of the smallest states in Malaysia. Coming back to Batu Feringghi, they have loads of water sports provided by experienced tour guides and owners of these businesses. One thing that makes it different here than any other beaches in Penang is the huge choices being offered to tourists and all these for a very reasonable price? Now, tell me one person who is going to reject such golden opportunities? There is parasailing, scuba diving, banana boat rides, scenery boat rides (with these huge glasses in the middle of the boats that allow us to take a clear look at the sea life below) and more!
All those sports activities will keep you busy all day long and tire you for the rest of the day! So, let us follow our human instincts-activities leads to being drenched out- leads to being tired- leads to the need to reenergise for the night- leads to FOOD!!! Yeeehaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
This is the most favourite part of my trips to Batu Fereingghi so much so, that even if we spend our days else where in the island, we’ll still head back to Batu Feringghi for our dinner and supper!!! No joke! Malaysian? Italian? Indian? Japanese? Chinese? Western?
Name it and you’ll most probably find the item if not in this one food court, the next!
(***keeping in mind that Penang is an anti-cannibalism Asian country alright?)
But personally, I think if you ever visit Batu Feringghi, try their locals…Try something new, something you’d never try back home. Ok. Take me as an example; I eat Indian food almost everyday back at home. Rice and curry. Rice and curry. Vegetarian dishes. Rice and curry. Rice and curry =) It is the culture, especially when you have two old, not to mention conservative grannies who can’t stand the smell of almost “anything-except-for-indian-f ood”. It happens…
So, when I’m out in Batu Feringghi, I eat their local dishes. One very famous dish is their ‘Char Kuey Teo’ (pronounced charre kueh tiau). Or maybe try their ‘Mamak Mee Goreng’ (famous fried noodles of Penang) or even their ‘Pasembor’ (potatoes, mixed vegetables, ‘special sauce’ and more) or their ‘Rojak’ (mixed fruits with peanut sauce)…….Eemm Eeeemmmmmm…
I better stop on the food section because this is making my stomach growl…
Another important thing that you must not miss out when the night falls is the daily markets put up by locals offering a wide range of souvenirs suiting each and every one of your choices. That is because I’ve been there and seen their massive collection of gifts on sale. Phew! On my last trip to Batu Feringghi, it took me two separate nights to cover a part of the night market because (no kidding) it stretches as far as your eyes can see, all along the main road parallel to the beaches! (Till to this very day, I haven’t reached to the end of the night market. Maybe because I get so excited seeing so many things on display that every time I attempt to reach the end, I’d stop in between somewhere to shop and by then, it’ll be too late to walk all the way to the end! Or they’ll start packing to head home!)…
Hmm, looks like I’ll be definitely heading back to Penang to settle an unfinished matter: to walk through the entire night market in a single night! Don’t forget to buzz me if you wanna’ join me! *wink*
