Babies on planes? What are your thoughts?

The recent survey by Total Travel showed that 81 per cent of those who responded voted babies should be neither seen or heard by them when they are travelling on planes. Some respondents even say, babies should be totally banned from travelling on airplanes.
I personally have had dilemmas about having babies of my own, being a budding traveller, because I know how hard it is after seeing parents struggle with their crying babies and tantrum throwing young toddlers. I feel sorry for them, and at the same time, think to myself "I wish that baby could just disappear!"
And I know, if I do end up with a child of my own, I don't want to do that to my fellow travellers so I would probably stop plane travels for a while for the sake of saving them from such hell.
Although, now with the information over internet widely available, there are now tips and recommendations for parents who must take their children with them on airplane travels, so they can be better prepared to handle the situation of discomfort and panic of these little ones.

What are your experience with babies on airplanes? Do you think those who responded to the Total Travel polls might have a point about limiting baby travel on planes?

In my experience as both a seasoned traveller and a mother who has travelled with her baby, I would have to say that if a mother is travelling with her child, she will usually have a very good reason - like dying family, a distant wedding, a funeral or some such manouvre ... more often than just a holiday, anyway.
Babies don;t travel well because of the pressure in their ears at take off. A good mother will take this time to make sure she has bought a bottle of some water or juice, ensuring that the child can swallow ... but admittedly not every mother thinks of it.
After that, it has been my experience that they settle very well... but not always *chuckle* and I am reminded of the time my young baby had screamed her way under the seat in front of me. The pilot advised that we were to fasten our stuff because we were commencing our landing... she wouldn;t come out.
So, I put my bag infront of her and left her there during the landing, figuring that she was safe there as in my lap... probably more so.
It takes maturity to deal with children.
Lilla ...
