Babies on planes? What are your thoughts?

The recent survey by Total Travel showed that 81 per cent of those who responded voted babies should be neither seen or heard by them when they are travelling on planes. Some respondents even say, babies should be totally banned from travelling on airplanes.

I personally have had dilemmas about having babies of my own, being a budding traveller, because I know how hard it is after seeing parents struggle with their crying babies and tantrum throwing young toddlers. I feel sorry for them, and at the same time, think to myself "I wish that baby could just disappear!"

And I know, if I do end up with a child of my own, I don't want to do that to my fellow travellers so I would probably stop plane travels for a while for the sake of saving them from such hell.

Although, now with the information over internet widely available, there are now tips and recommendations for parents who must take their children with them on airplane travels, so they can be better prepared to handle the situation of discomfort and panic of these little ones.

What are your experience with babies on airplanes? Do you think those who responded to the Total Travel polls might have a point about limiting baby travel on planes?

Oh my word, what next ... no children, singles or people with disabilities?

In my experience as both a seasoned traveller and a mother who has travelled with her baby, I would have to say that if a mother is travelling with her child, she will usually have a very good reason - like dying family, a distant wedding, a funeral or some such manouvre ... more often than just a holiday, anyway.

Babies don;t travel well because of the pressure in their ears at take off. A good mother will take this time to make sure she has bought a bottle of some water or juice, ensuring that the child can swallow ... but admittedly not every mother thinks of it.

After that, it has been my experience that they settle very well... but not always *chuckle* and I am reminded of the time my young baby had screamed her way under the seat in front of me. The pilot advised that we were to fasten our stuff because we were commencing our landing... she wouldn;t come out.

So, I put my bag infront of her and left her there during the landing, figuring that she was safe there as in my lap... probably more so.

It takes maturity to deal with children.

I admit I'm one of those people who have that niggling, irritating thought 'Why do people bring babies on the plane?' - especially at the prospect of the 26-hour flight laden with calming my claustrophobia, jitters I get from sitting down in one position for too long, the horrible dry food, the long queue for the toilet only to end up vomiting because the last person in had let out something that rivals a geyser in Rotorua. But at the same time, I try to tell myself that parents with babies have reasons for bringing them along and most of the time, these babies eventually settle down anyway. But I was thinking that maybe they could invent a noise-proof booth for parents travelling with babies - the same thing they have at the cinemas...

Hi all - thanks for dropping by and putting in your 2 cents. As with all debates many have their own opinions on this matter, however there are always solutions to these problems, like as Lilla says to prepare liquid to help their ear pressure ease. (Thanks Lilla for the tips, and no worries about the score! It's your opinion that counts!)

Wow, I find it very disturbing that people would say babies shouldn't fly on airplanes. Get over it. You obviously have never had children and needed to be somewhere.

I agree. Babies and toddlers should NOT be on airplanes. They are loud and annoying to other passengers around them. In fact, airports should ban them from flying. However, I mostly blame the parents, considering that they are the ones who bring them along. Leave the seed at home or don't fly at all!

if your military and you are switching bases which cant be helped you have to take your baby or toddler on a plane..so theres no way it can be banned period. think about it before you complain it could be a military family switching bases. this must be people who dont have kids complaing!!!!

I think hat children should be 5 years old or older to fly - flying is uncomfortable for adults - it must be awful for children. Crying babies on planes are disruptive and upsetting for everyone on board, I personally think its really inconsiderate.

Air travel is stressful enough and I believe that babies on a plane add to that stress. Some airlines are planning to charge customers with babies or give charge to be in a baby-free zone on the aircraft. I'll leave it at that.

Oh dear God.. You people are irritating and annoying. Not ALL children are annoying on planes. You know who is annoying? Unreasonable people who think the earth revolves around them. Sorry. Babies have JUST as much right as YOU to be on an airplane. If flying makes you nervou and a baby crying alittle at take off makes you more nervous, take the damn train. Sorry, my parents died and I had to fly across country with my crying baby, sorry the few minutes my child cried it annoyed you, I will be sure to tell my family not to die as it annoys the fellow traveler.

I just got back from a 4 hour flight from hell...travelling from Las Vegas to New Orleans with 2 screaming babies...and when I say screaming, it was the entire flight, no breaks! I am sorry but maybe the parents should have thought about this factor before flying on a four hour trip, maybe breaking it up for the babies sake? Both sets of parents were obviously first time parents because they looked like they had no clue how to calm their child! Please, if you have to travel with your baby on a plane, please learn how to quiet them!
