Australian domestic airfares... is it really necessary?

I have three friends up in Darwin now, so I have been dying to visit. A little search on Flight Centre showed that it would cost me a little over $500 return from Sydney.
Thankfully Sydney to Coffs Harbour I have Virgin Blue that offers mid-week flights for around $60 one way.
Is this really necessary? It cost more to visit somewhere in Australia than to go to Fiji for the same amount of time. What exactly are we paying?
Do you think they are charging these prices because they know they can get away with it?
There seem to be a lack of competition in Australian domestic airlines. We have Qantas and Virgin Blue, then we have Jetstar which might as well just be Qantas. Last year, Tiger airways entered our markets but with very limited services around the country. I believe there are more services now, but as consumers we are still being tricked with all the hidden costs!
So while Europe has just about more than ten low cost carriers and Asia has its share with Air Asia, are we Australians stuck with paying high prices just to see more of our own country?
